Eido Shimano is a Rinzai Roshi(Zen Master).He trained at Heiren-ji under Soen Nakagawa at Ryutaku-ji. In 1964, he moved to New York on his own and less than 10 years later he opened the New York Zendo Shobo-ji and the Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji centers for Zen practice. In 2004, he received the Buddhism Transmission Award from the Japan-based Society of Promotion of Buddhism. This award is given to individuaks who have made a significant impact on the dissemination of Buddhism in the West.
